Sotheby's sale
An anonymous bidder purchased the earliest recorded rules of football for a staggering £881,250 at a Sotheby's auction on Thursday. The world's oldest football club Sheffield FC were the recipients, with their coffers swelled considerably by the massive interest the lot generated. Included in the sale were the original handwritten draft rules from 1858 and the only known surviving copy of the printed Rules, Regulations & Laws from a year later.
The documents provide a fascinating insight into both sporting and social history in this country, with the images below illuminating some of the lot's highlights.
